ACORN clients help students achieve key personal training qualification

Clients from one of the UK’s largest drug and alcohol rehabilitation providers have provided support to students completing a prestigious personal training course at a Middleton college.

Students studying for the level 3 Diploma in Personal Training at Hopwood Hall College were given the opportunity to practice their skills on 23 volunteers from ACORN Recovery Projects.

Learners trained with an ACORN service user for one hour, where they screened clients for injuries and discovered their exercise history, then made suitable changes and adaptations to their planned sessions before delivering the training.

Following the sessions, many clients have expressed an interest in completing the course themselves.

By providing this support, ACORN Recovery Projects were able to strengthen their partnership with Hopwood Hall College, who deliver a range of free training opportunities to ACORN clients aimed at improving their employability, education, health and wellbeing.

Lisa McKay, sport programme manager at Hopwood Hall College, said:

“The ACORN clients worked really hard and gave 100% effort. The feedback they provided was extremely positive and they were all keen to attend again in the near future.

“The learners thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and working with their ‘patients’. This gave them a true insight into working with a ‘real life’ client, and made them focus on delivering a safe and effective session whilst demonstrating excellent customer service and communication skills.

“The learners were an asset to the college and their course due to their professionalism and, as a tutor, I was very proud of each of them.”

ACORN Recovery Projects provide a range of innovative drug and alcohol rehabilitation services across the North West, including reduction and motivation programmes, abstinence treatment programmes, combined treatment programmes, prison based recovery programmes, supported accommodation, and social enterprise.
