ACORN help score over £700 for charity at football tournament

Staff from ACORN Recovery Projects braved treacherous weather conditions to help raise over £700 for charity at a special football tournament.

The ACORN team joined others from across the Calico Group – as well as a guest team from Charter House – to fight it out to reach the top of the table at the tournament, which took place at the Prairie Sports Village, Burnley.

After a series of nail-biting matches, ACORN made it all the way to the final, but were pipped at the post by Charter House, who were presented with a trophy to celebrate their achievement.

Organised by Hannah Buckley from Calico’s Income Management team, the money raised from the event will go to One Brick at a Time, a charitable organisation that provides skills exchanges between the developed and developing worlds, helping to address issues of poverty and education attainment.

Hannah is one of several Calico employees who will be travelling to Fort Portal, Uganda, as part of the scheme to help improve and renovate a local school building.

Each person taking part in the project has to raise £2500 to contribute towards building and refurbishment costs.

Sarah Hanson, Managing Director of ACORN, said:

“It was great to see the team from ACORN reach the final. They were really enthusiastic and played really well.

“The One Brick at a Time initiative is a fantastic cause, and we were delighted to help contribute towards its funding.”

Hannah said:

“It was really inspiring that, despite the wind and rain, so many staff from across Calico take part in the tournament and support One Brick at a Time.

”The staff have been so generous with their time and their money – they’ve helped raise an incredible amount for a fantastic cause, and I’m really grateful for their kindness.

“I was really inspired by staff who have already been to Uganda in recent years. We’re all really looking forward to getting out there to start work and help make a difference to the area.”
