How do I know if I have depression? – The warning signs

Depression can affect people from all backgrounds and, if left untreated, can have serious consequences.

You might have overheard someone say, “you sound depressed” but sounding depressed and being depressed are two very different things. We all have our down days from time to time, but those who feel down daily could be suffering from depression.

Clients with depression often report struggling to see a positive way out of their situation, with dark thoughts and feelings becoming unbearable. Depression can gradually creep up on individuals and before they know it, they are in the grips of their low mood.

The stigma around mental health has eroded significantly in the years since I first started working as a therapist. However, there are people who still feel ashamed that they have become depressed. I have never met anyone yet who has chosen to be depressed. Life can throw up challenges that can be difficult to deal with and can spark depressive moods and behaviours that are difficult to shake off.

Here are some of the main symptoms that you might be experiencing if you are suffering depression be that mild, moderate or severe:

• Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
• Anger or irritability
• Loss of interest in daily activities
• Sleep changes
• Appetite or weight change
• Self-Loathing
• Poor concentration

These are just some of the signs and symptoms of low mood or depression. By having some awareness of the early signs of depression, professional help can be sought before you spiral further. No one deserves to feel on their own in times of darkness. So, if you’re consistently experiencing any of the above, it may be time to seek professional help.
